Cooking on the fire

The Fox Patrol, eight Scouts from Galway competed in the Phoenix Challenge, the Scouts national camping competition, at Salesian College, Pallaskenry at the end of August. The eight teenagers, aged between 13 and 15, won the coveted Gold Award for achieving over 80% of the available marks and came 13th out of almost 100 patrols in attendance  from all over Ireland. They joined over 800 scouts and 350 adult helpers at the event.

As well as maintaining a very high standard of camping and pioneering, they also had to demonstrate competency in team building, backwoods and survival skills, together with cooking meals on a wood fire for an invited adult guest. When they finished the four day event, they had to clear their site, and in the words of the Scouting principle, “leave no trace.”

Congratulations to Eva Manion, Thomas Powell, Clodagh Nolan, Rian Madden, Kate Kelly and Liam Scully of 1st Galway St Josephs troop and their team mates, Keiran Spelman and Dillion Buckley, from 12th Galway (Claregalway) who rounded out the patrol.

Everyone was thrilled with the great result, and was well deserved to the scouts who put so much hard work into the event.

The group will be holding an open day for anyone interested in taking part in our activities on Saturday 26th September in their Den between 12pm and 3pm.
